Women in the South African music industry now have an awards platform of their own.

This follows the launch of the first Basadi in Music Awards (BIMA) at the Joburg Theater earlier this month.

The awards were founded by Hloni Modise, entertainment entrepreneur and dean of public relations.

BIMA honors and celebrates the excellence of women in the music industry – singers, performers, composers, producers and other fields.

modise says Channel24 that these awards were born out of the uncertainty of the Covid-19 pandemic and the lack of validation of women in the music entertainment industry.

“It’s an idea that’s been in my suggestion box for a very long time. When Covid came around, obviously everyone in the entertainment industry knows our world was rocked. So I had to go and open the dusty suggestion box and take that particular proposal.”

Modise added: “It all started as an idea that I put down on paper, and it seemed huge, impossible and unrealistic. When I spoke to people, they said it was a great idea”.

“The planning really started last year when I called some friends of mine with different skills. I explained that we wouldn’t have the prizes yet, but we would have to start planning it, and the funding would come to us. would find along the way,” she explained. .

The CEO of the awards added that the organization had submitted around 30 proposals which were turned down and then approved by the SAMPRA development fund.

“We believe that even though women are celebrated at other award shows, women are still marginalized in terms of winners. This is a property where we celebrate women in the music industry and work phenomenal they have accomplished.

“I’m also particularly excited about the technical categories. Like Stylist of the Year, Entertainment Journalist of the Year, Radio Entertainment Producer of the Year,” Modise said. Channel24.

“As a young kid who’s been in the music industry for a long time, I know how hard I’ve had to work to get recognition, but to a large extent, I still have to fight to be recognized from somewhere. any way. I still think it will be a platform that honors the women’s revolution within the industry,” she said.

Attending the star-studded launch were Dr Mpho Phalatse, the Mayor of Johannesburg, music industry powerhouses singer Abigail Kubheka, Linah Ebony Ngcobo, Penny Lebyane and Gloria Bosman.

Actor KB Motsilanyane hosted the glamorous event with a line-up of all-female performers including Makhadzi, Holly Rey, Nhlanhla Mafu, Candy Tsamandebele, Brenda Mtambo, Boohle, Winnie Mashaba and DJ Mami, while DJ Lerato Kganyago closed the program with a set.

SAMPRA Marketing Director, Tiyani Maluleke said, “As the SAMPRA team, we are incredibly proud to be part of this brand because of everything it stands for and everything it seeks to achieve.
