Ed Sheeran announces plans to parody Christmas clips with Sir Elton John
Ed Sheeran has revealed he plans to spoof Christmas classic number one music videos with Sir Elton John for their festive collaboration track.
The chart-topping superstar has teamed up with his friend and mentor Sir Elton to create three new Christmas songs, the first of which will be released in early December and will be titled Merry Christmas.
The singer, 30, released his fourth solo studio album = last week.
Speaking on The Jonathan Ross Show about the first collaboration song, he said: “The music video we’re doing, I’ve chosen the top eight most classic UK Christmas numbers and we’re going to parody them.
“I don’t know if we have the rights, I’m trying to get Elton to dress up as a snowman and me to be the little boy.
“We’re going to be East 17, I think, and David Bowie, we’re going to try to do the last Christmas thing.”
The singer-songwriter said Sir Elton suggested in a phone call on Christmas Day that they do a festive song together.
Sheeran said he initially pushed the idea back as he wanted to focus on his new album, but wrote the song’s chorus that day.
He explained that the death of his friend Michael Gudinski earlier this year made him reassess his hesitation, saying he thought, “Why am I doing this again? Tomorrow is not promised”.
He added: “It hits everything you want in a Christmas song… I’d send Elton some mixes and he’d call and say, ‘No more fucking sleigh bells! “”
The singer married his longtime partner Cherry Seaborn in 2019, with their daughter Lyra Antarctica born the following year.
Sheeran said he is looking forward to his Christmas with his daughter, adding, “Last Christmas was fun to have our first Christmas together, but she was definitely a drop. This one will be fun.
“I really want to cut to the chase, my friends all think my daughter is cute, I can send Christmas cards and fill them with glitter and say they are from her to piss them off. People do it to me.
The singer has just finished self-isolating for 10 days with his daughter after contracting Covid-19. He explained that his wife was away when he was diagnosed so she had to live next door to the couple during the quarantine.
Sheeran added: “It was really, really nice to have some one-on-one time (with my daughter).
“I spend a lot of time with my daughter, but I’ve been working pretty solidly for five months. So doing 10 days straight was pretty fun. She is 14 months old and walks everywhere.
The Jonathan Ross Show airs Saturday at 9.30pm on ITV and ITV Hub.
