With the NFL coaching carousel going full throttle, news of the hiring of the next head coach, coordinator or general manager could be announced at any time.

That means NFL insiders like Ian Rapoport are essentially on call in case a shoe drops and news of a hiring needs to be reported. A perfect example of this happened on Thursday when the NFL Network reporter was a guest on the WEEI show Gresh and Keefe.

After talking about the head coach’s potential landing spots for Buffalo Bills offensive coordinator Brian Daboll, Rapoport was asked about the possibility of the NFL changing its overtime rules after the weekend’s divisional round game. -end last when his phone died.

“Also, back then, the focus was more on…you know…oh, shoot – I just got a text, I gotta go,” Rapoport said before the call suddenly ended.

Shocked, there were some initial laughs before Andy Gresh responded to what just happened.

“Well, there’s Ian Rapoport,” he said.

“This is the first time this has happened to us all season,” added show producer Chris Scheim.

You can listen to the full segment here.

This wasn’t the first time Rapoport had abruptly ended an interview due to his phone buzzing, and Gresh and Rich Keefe discussed the same event involving Rapoport and former Washington, DC host Chad Dukes.

Dukes notoriously called Rapoport a “son of a bitch” and an “asshole” after twice having to quickly leave a pre-recorded hit. This led to a brief feud between the two and Rapoport eventually reappeared the next day to apologize for jumping out so soon and demanded an apology from Dukes for cursing him. Dukes did not apologize for calling him an SOB.

Gresh noted that this was not how they were going to handle what happened, even though it was sudden and left them hanging.

“It happens,” Gresh said. “Now we can at least turn around if we have something at 1:30 p.m..”

Former Colts defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus is hired as head coach of the Chicago Bears, the sources say.

It turns out the Chicago Bears have hired Matt Eberflus as their next head coach. Gresh and company joked that they made Rapoport late to be the first to break the news because ESPN’s Adam Schefter tweeted it a minute before Rapoport could.

They finished talking about what happened, teased a Boston Bruins segment, and then moved on to commercial. But it was certainly a time that on-air talent doesn’t necessarily plan for or anticipate.
