Angel Olsen appears on Matt Wilkinson’s show on Apple Music 1 today from the studio, discussing their brand new film-influenced dreamy album Big Time and recording in Neil Young’s studio.

Angel Olsen was influenced by cinema and dreams when making Big Time:
I think it’s part of my way of dealing. And whenever I’m going through a tough time or going through a lot of changes, I tend to dream more than other times. A lot of my clips are really based on dreams I’ve had or vivid images that I think of when I write. If I wasn’t for music, I’d probably be doing movies. Do not act in them. There’s acting in what I do now, but at least I have control over the editing at the end of the day.

Angel Olsen on the recording of Big Time at Neil Young’s studio:
Well, that’s how you imagine Neil Young’s studio, you know? So it was just the perfect setting. And I had listened to Neil Young a lot. It was so beautiful. You walk out of this wood paneled studio into the canyon and out, and there’s a picnic table and some trees. And there’s a little bridge where the water goes and there’s just a nice hill behind it all. I think the environment really helped make the experience of recording this stream more for me and everyone else. The idea of going to the beach every day before going to the studio seemed really nice. That doesn’t always sound good. Sometimes I’m really ready to work and be in a box and not see anyone. But for those songs, I really thought they were so simple and so straightforward. It was really about recording them in the right way and making sure we didn’t overdo it.

Angel Olsen on fans telling them their music has helped them through tough times:
It wouldn’t be the first time fans had come up to me and talked to me about this. I was also speaking earlier today and wondering, wondering what people think of me or how I spend my time just in terms of my job. They think I walk around thinking sad things all the time. It turns out that it’s really easy to talk about the hard stuff because those are the things that are relatable. You know? People can identify with that very easily. So on this record I was trying to challenge myself to write more about the feeling of calm and love, taking the risk of writing more simple and structured songs.
